چکیده
'A basic and basically unsolved problem in fluid dynamics is to determine the evolution of rising bubbles falling drops one miscible liquid another' [1]. Here, we address this important literature gap present first theory predicting velocity, volume composition such at low Reynolds numbers. For case where diffusion out drop negligible, obtain a universal scaling law. more general occurs into drop, full governed by parameter-free first-order ordinary differential equation, whose closed form solution exists, only depends on initial condition. Our analysis primarily 'drop-scale' effective parameters for diffusivity through interfacial boundary layer. We validate our results against experimental data water suspended syrup, corresponding certain regimes mass exchange ratio between explicitly identify drop-scale theory. [1] Joseph, D.D. We investigate the low Reynolds number spreading of a low-viscosity volume of fluid, hereafter called a " bubble " , in the limit that the fluids are miscible and interfacial tension can be neglected; the symmetry of the bubble's spreading is br...
متن کاملFragment Formation in the Break-up of a Drop Falling in a Miscible Liquid
When falling in a lighter miscible solvent, a drop of liquid deforms to a torus which then breaks up into several fragments or just disappears by diffusion. By using liquids of different compositions we show the universal behaviour of the phenomenon, and its dependence on two nondimensional numbers, the fragmentation number F , and the Schmidt number S. While F marks the transition from diffusi...
متن کاملOrientation of Symmetric Bodies Falling in a Second-Order Liquid at Nonzero Reynolds Number
We study the steady translational fall of a homogeneous body of revolution around an axis s, with foreand-aft symmetry, in a second-order liquid at nonzero Reynolds (i ) and Weissenberg (G ) numbers. We show that, at first order in these parameters, only two orientations are allowed, namely, those with s either parallel or perpendicular to the direction of the gravity /. In both cases the tra...
متن کاملFragmentation instability of a liquid drop falling inside a heavier miscible fluid.
We report a different type of drop instability, where the density difference between the drop and the solvent is negative. We show that the drop falls inside the solvent down to a minimum height, then fragmentation takes place and secondary droplets rise up to the surface. We have developed a theoretical model that captures the essentials of the phenomenon and predicts the correct scalings for ...
متن کاملStability of the shape of a surfactant-laden drop translating at low Reynolds number
We examine the effect of surfactants on the evolution of the shape of an initially nonspherical drop translating in an otherwise quiescent fluid at low Reynolds number. A combination of the boundary-integral method and a finite-difference scheme is used to solve the coupled fluid dynamics and surfactant transport problems, in conjunction with the Frumkin adsorption framework to account for the ...
